Remember the time you went to a social gathering and someone was foolish enough to bring up politics? Tensions run rampant as guests fight to make their opinions heard or struggle to maintain a polite facade. Eventually, someone manages to say something totally stupid or absolutely brilliant and the uneasy conversation comes to an abrupt end.
And so begins Sunset, an anti-war film that smugly drops the threat of nuclear war among a close circle of friends at a party. But the conversation appears to be a welcome distraction from the mini-drama simmering between Henry, Patricia and her former beau, Julian. However personal conflicts are quickly pushed to the back burner when they face the chaos of an actual nuclear threat.
The well-constructed ensemble cast and screenplay gives one a feeling of the theater experience, at once immediate and impactful. It’s difficult to watch Austin Pendleton though, as Julian, without recalling his delightful stuttering lawyer in My Cousin Vinny. But he manages to steer us into his character with an impassioned performance.

It would be a mistake to think of Sunset solely as a message movie, even though the latter half of the film deals with the reality of impending global nuclear doom. What shines through this rather heavy-handed propaganda film is Henry's unbearable lightness of love for Patricia, and the power of their connection to transcend any horror they may face.
