Hedy Lamarr. The name conjures up visions of a mysterious woman swimming nude in Ecstasy, a Czech film from 1933, which of course stirred up controversy and curiosity about the young actress. This legendary film star and sex goddess had so much talent that she created frequency hopping - a technology that would later be used for our WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth systems.
First shown in 2018 on PBS: American Masters, director Alexandra Dean presents Bombshell: Hedy Lamarr, a three-dimensional look at this creative woman, something that is rarely achieved in most cinematic biographies.
Together with George Antheil, they developed this invention during WWII, hoping the government would put it to use for searching out enemy submarines. The documentary reveals that she treated her film career as the "side business" in favor of her greatest passion in science, spending much of her free time drafting various inventions. Like Marlon Brando, who happily roamed his island, Tetiaroa, setting up Eco-conscious experiments, Hedy found her greatest joy in research and scientific applications.
Bombshell also delves into her personal dramas as well - her numerous marriages, flings and family - and of course, her greatest film roles.
Now on Netflix, get ready to be surprised by Hedy Lamarr, a genius you thought was 'only' an actress.
