It was easy to love this indie film: From the opening credits to the surprise twisty ending, Paint It Red delivered what all indie films should - namely a sideways glance at a favorite genre.
In this case director/writer Paul T. Murray creates a comical take on Hitchcock's Rear Window and throws in everyone's favorite indie queen, Sally Kirkland. A serial killer is stalking tenants in her LA courtyard apartment complex; which is filled with the usual quirky Hollywood types, honing their non-existent talents until their big break comes.
Ciaran, our hapless hero, is an artist who grimly paints on, certain that his art will one day make him a fortune. One day he stumbles across a bag of money and in no time finds himself ass up in curious cops, greedy shiftless friends and cheap Millennial femmes. At the same time, his neighbors begin dropping like flies as he tries to keep the cash and hold everyone off until he can scram with the stolen loot.
This smart little mystery is worth watching, but beware - it can get a little bloody.
