Imagine you’re stuck in 2074, where you must destroy your “future self”, in order to protect a lifestyle of mercenary killing, drugs, and tepid sex – not to mention your corporate world – would you do it?
This is the conundrum that faces Joe Simmons (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a time-traveling assassin, who dwells in a futuristic society where “loopers” like himself kill other underworld drones, in exchange for bars of silver.
Convoluted enough for ya? I’m just getting started!
Now you discover that someone, known as the Rainmaker, will kill everyone associated with the “looping” business, sometime in the far-off future.
Hoo-boy! If that’s not confusing enough, then you’re definitely ready for your older self, Old Joe (Bruce Willis), to open a serious can of whoop-ass when he travels back in time to kill the baby Rainmaker – while young Joe frantically hunts for himself (Old Joe – remember?).
A lot of ink has been spilled in praise of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s multi-faceted performance as young Joe. Most reviews have chosen to focus on the makeup, yet it takes a skilled actor to reveal the twin personas of both generations in one man. The cafe scene between veteran Joe and wise guy punk Joe demonstrates this for our delight.
Emily Blunt as Sara Rollins, the uber-protective mother of her Rainmaker offspring commands our attention in this masculine tale of love and loss. Add a dash of telekinetic powers to this already mind-bending flick and you’re ready for one wild cinematic experience. Catch up with Looper and enjoy the ride!
