It's wonderful to see a film featuring black actors that focuses on a contemporary story, and August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize masterpiece, Fences, is brilliantly realized for film audiences by director and actor Denzel Washington.
Although Fences hit the screens late, it garnered 96 nominations galore - and for three great reasons - Viola Davis, Denzel Washington and August Wilson.
Viola Davis earned a SAG, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and an Academy Awards for her extraordinary performance as
Rose Maxson. Many - including this film critic - wish the Hollywood Academy gods would have nominated her in the BEST ACTRESS category, rather than in the secondary slot of BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS.
Denzel Washington also won a SAG award for BEST ACTOR, but missed taking home an Oscar for BEST DIRECTOR.
The late playwright August Wilson once explained why his plays transcended color-coding. “...contained within that experience, because it is a human experience,” he said, “are all universalities.”
