Horror and dark shadows stalk Lindsey and Jeff in Midnighters, a cat-and-mouse film about a squabbling Millennial couple heading home after a long night of New Year’s Eve partying. “Things that go bump in the night” takes on a new meaning when they are involved in a hit-and-run accident that unsettles their relationship because of one wrong choice.
Ward Horton puts the big C back in Creepy for his role as the obviously fake Detective Smith as he ramps up the shivers, plus walks away with the entire film.
Alex Essoe and Dylan Mctee work hard to establish that Lindsey and Jeff’s marriage is headed for a tall cliff, and Perla Haney-Jardine gives a subtle performance as Lindsey’s hot mess of a sister.
Director Julius Ramsay notes, “It was also very important for my brother and I going into this project to have a compelling female lead. So much of the time in thrillers, female protagonists are under-developed. With Lindsey, I feel we've created a character who’s both strong, complicated, and able to change in a compelling way over the course of the story.”
Midnighters promises moderate gore and maximum thrills and delivers something more in this horror thriller with a feminist twist. The Ramsay brothers appear ready to follow in the footsteps of the Coen boys and I look forward to reviewing their next exciting project. BRAVO!
